Vijay undertook his medical training in Karnataka, India qualifying in 1993 and became a GP in 2000. He completed his VTS (vocational training scheme for GPs) training in the West of Scotland and worked as a partner in Paisley before moving to Birchwood Medical Practice in Horley in December 2003. Vijay is the Senior Partner at Birchwood and is also a GP trainer.
As of 1 January 2018, Vijay was pleased to announce that Birchwood Medical Practice was joining forces with Smallfield Surgery and Townhill Medical Practice to create the East Surrey division of The Modality Partnership and he was honoured to be appointed as the first Executive Partner for this division. It is an exciting new development and creates a practice for 35,000 patients.
Vijay has played an active role in commissioning healthcare in East Surrey since Practice Based Commissioning came to existence. He has been particularly interested in education initiatives both for patients and clinicians. He is also keen to support GP practice development and is a clinical leader with a passion for improving the care of patients with long term conditions.
Since April 2015, Vijay has been the Clinical Chair of East Surrey CCG. Vijay has provided stable leadership to the CCG during a challenging period when there were several changes to the senior executive and opportunities for the organisation to work more collaboratively and at a larger scale were being explored. The CCG now forms part of the Central Sussex and East Surrey Alliance as well as the Sussex and East Surrey Sustainability and Transformation Partnership (STP). Vijay is very supportive of a more integrated approach to healthcare and has been building good relationships with other stakeholders. He takes particular pride in the CCG’s engagement with member practices and patients.
