East Surrey Safe Haven
East Surrey Clinical Commissioning Group, in partnership with Surrey County Council, Surrey & Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, Richmond Fellowship and Reigate Stepping Stones, opened a local Safe Haven on 21stMarch 2016 at;
Wingfield Resource Centre
St Annes Drive
Off Noke Drive
At the Safe Haven, mental health professionals listen, talk and help people through difficult times.
People experiencing mental health difficulties can feel that they have nowhere to go and no one to turn to. Carers and family members can feel isolated too. The Safe Haven offers a place where people can talk as much or as little as they want or where they can just sit and have a coffee with people who understand what they may be feeling.
Safe Havens are opening all over Surrey and can be an alternative to Accident and Emergency (A&E) departments. A&E isn't always the best place for people already feeling emotionally distressed; it can be busy and isn't staffed by mental health professionals. This means people's symptoms aren't always addressed in the best way and they may be more likely to be admitted to hospital.
By listening, we know that, with the right help, people can stay settled at home and be supported through their mental health issues without going reaching crisis point and without having to go to their local A&E. Safe Havens can offer a relaxed environment, where everyone is welcome, and where expert support (including signposting and referrals) is available.
The Safe Haven is staffed by Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (trained MH professionals) and supported by Recovery Workers employed by Richmond Fellowship.
The service runs every evening between 6 and 11pm, 365 days a year, and mirrors a service that has been running successfully in Aldershot for the last two years.
The difference with the Safe Haven project is that, more than ever before, we have listened to what is really helpful and important to those in need and have developed the service accordingly. We have been told that attending somewhere where no appointment is necessary and where carers and family members are welcome is of primary importance.
